At Timberley Projects, we have been supplying foundations work for Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire construction projects for many years. Any new build or extension will require foundations of one type or another. These might be of the traditional strip type, designed raft solutions, ground bearing slabs or beam and block floors. Or they might utilise underpinning or mini-piling. Find out more about each type here.
How vital are solid foundations?
Foundations work is one of the most critical elements of any building project. The strength of a building lies in its foundation. The primary purpose of the foundation is to hold the structure above it and keep it upright! So we can safely say they’re not just important… They’re vital! Both the depth and type of foundation required are determined by several factors including soil conditions, the proximity of trees or other buildings and the size of the structure you’re building.
Foundations work – Digging down deeper on soil types:
It’s essential to consider soil when designing foundations and drainage systems. At Timberley we work mainly in Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. The different types of soil we often come across are clay, sand, shale, chalk and bedrock. Of these, the bedrock has the highest bearing capacity, while the clay, sand and shale, being softer, will generally require deeper groundwork.
Building solid relationships:
As groundworks suppliers, we often need to work alongside third-party industry experts. Foundations work is no exception to this rule. An engineer will design your building’s foundations because they must be compliant with building regulations. Their designs are based on the type of soil that will bear the building, and also whether trees, sewers, adjacent structures and watercourses are present on site. We will implement their designs using the correct processes and specialist machinery. Once we have completed the groundworks, a Building Control Officer or Structural Engineer will inspect and sign them off so that the project can move forward to the construction phase.
American singer, David Allan Coe, once said: “It is not the beauty of a building you should look at; its the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time.” As leading groundworks and foundations work contractors in Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire, we couldn’t agree more!
